The Symptoms of Gum Disease
Does your pet have bad breath, red or swollen gums, or yellow tartar build-up on their teeth?
These are some of the early symptoms of gum disease. As the disease progresses, your pet may have bleeding gums or loose, broken or missing teeth.
Periodontal (gum) disease in pets occurs much the same way as it does in people.
Bacteria from decaying food particles cause infection along the gum line. Then hard, yellow plaque builds up on the teeth. The infection causes the gums to become inflamed and irritated and causes the gums to begin pulling away from the teeth.
More bacteria and infection are now able to fill the pockets between the teeth and gums. Over time, the teeth become decayed and the ligaments and bone that hold the teeth in place begin to deteriorate. Your pet's teeth become loose and sore and eventually fall out. As you can imagine, this process is painful to our companions.
Why is Your Pet's Dental Care So Important?
The prevention and treatment of gum disease and the care of decayed or fractured teeth in dogs and cats have become some of the most common and important procedures in veterinary care.
Gum disease and poor dental health not only cause bad breath ... the bacteria and infection associated with these problems can cause infection to occur in other parts of your pet's body. Dental disease is a major cause of heart, liver and kidney disease.
As if all this weren't bad enough, sore gums and teeth are painful and can cause your pet to stop eating and drinking normally ... resulting in malnutrition, weight loss and dehydration ... all of which can cause or aggravate other health conditions. A clean, healthy mouth and sound teeth contribute greatly to your pet's overall well being.
Dental treatment involves placing your pet under general anesthesia. Our Doctors recommend pre-anesthetic blood work to check internal organ function. Your pet will be continuously monitored during the procedure and we use the safest anesthesia available to ensure your pet's safety.
The dental cleaning procedure begins by removing tartar and plaque from your pet's teeth both above and below the gum line with the same kind of dental instruments a dentist would use on your teeth. If necessary, infected or fractured teeth can be extracted.
Home Dental Care
Once any dental problems are taken care of through veterinary care the rest is up to you.
A regular home dental cleaning program will be your pet's first line of defense in preventing gum disease and tooth decay. Our veterinary team will be happy to demonstrate home dental cleaning techniques.
Although your initial attempts may be awkward for you and your pet, don't give up! Eventually your pet will look forward to their dental cleanings and the resulting fresh breath and clean mouth feeling. Your patience and effort will be rewarded with a happier and healthier pet!
**Please call us today to schedule your pet's dental cleaning! The dental cleaning must be performed by March 1, 2012 in order to take advantage of this special offer!**
